Diving In The Bear Pit

Images of Lash and Bebop from the Deadlock wiki, poster by me

The Lash™ was gearing up for his biggest fight yet against the rising star Bebop. Though he had never met him Lash already had a strong dislike for the scrap golem as he had stolen Lash’s signature move. As Lash looked himself in the mirror hyping himself up for the fight he just thought about how awesome and amazing he was. But for some reason his usual pre fight routine wasn’t working today. There was a sense of foreboding hanging in the air like the omnipresent cigaret smoke in The Bear Pit’s dressing rooms.

Lash wasn’t the type to get nervous, even though much of history stage presence was a persona his confidence was not. As he sat there preening his mustache he pondered where this anxiety was coming from. After a minute or two of this he came to the conclusion it must have to do with the creepy letters that lizard lady had been sending him from jail. Lash was used to his fair share of adoration but something about receiving dozens of letters a day from a convicted mob enforcer was a little different from the typical fan mail. Luckily Vyper was locked up in Rykers after getting convicted for the Mendoza murders which made Lash feel a bit safer.

Untitled Artwork

As Lash stepped into the ring a smile crossed his mustache obscured lips. He slipped into the boisterous confidence he wore like a jacket in the ring. As he stepped in the crowd boo’ed, this was typical as Lash was something of a heel with his arrogant persona and sometimes below the belt moves. After he had made his entrance from the other side of the pit walked up the babyface newcomer Bebop. The crowd went wild for him. Bebop was set to be the hero of this story. He was a scrap golem made by the local junkyard owner miss Shelly to help her with operating her business. But now miss Shelly had fallen ill so Bebop was going behind her back to fight in The Bear Pit to earn extra money to pay for her treatment. It was a tale endearing to the crowd and juxtaposed nicely against the selfish Lash who only fought for his own fame.

As they each took position in their respective corners the announcer began to speak:

The two fighter squared up and prepared to duel. The fight was scripted of course, they all were. Bebop would lose to set him up for a grudge match that would really wow the crowds. They began to clash and everything was going according to script. Bebop began throwing a heavy uppercut that Lash could easily dodge but just as he began to do so he caught something in the corner of his eye. The lizard. There she was. In the front row. Smirking. She was saying something… he could almost hear her…

In game audio pulled from Deadlock’s files. VA Stephanie Kerbis

Bam! Bebop’s punch connects full force to Lash’s jaw. He’s out cold. The crowd cheers unaware of what has transpired. Gamblers in the back rows who had bet on a supposedly fixed match begin yelling. there is a cacophony of noise as Lash lays dazed on the floor. Turns out he was right to be nervous about the lizard.

Movies: There is More Than Meets the Eye

I Liked getting to read some treatises on filming as I find the art behind it quite interesting. Most of my family are big movie buffs so it’s something that has been a part of my life for a while. I will say I find writing about film more interesting than reading about it however so I was excited to get to the next blog and could have done more with this one.

Reintroduction

This was my favorite part of the assignment be far. I really love doing critical analysis of pieces of media I enjoy so this was a treat. Aoi Todo is one of my favorite characters and I think his reintroduction to the narrative really suits him. I hope I provided adequate reasoning as to why I think the scene is good.

The Sandman Strikes Again!!!

Deadlock is one of my favorite games so getting to make a video out of my gameplay was fun. Trying to get the text to scroll on screen at the pace I wanted it to drove me up the wall though. My video editor really wanted it to go slow and I had to mess around with Python to get it to work.

Come to Work With Me

I don’t have a lot to say about this one, I love my job .

My Name is Skyler White, Yo!

I really like to make composited meme videos like this. My family does not like them and thinks they are overstimulating but I don’t let that stop me. It can be very hard to come up with good scenes to mash together. The vine boom sound effect on a TikTok gave me the idea for this one.

My Name is Skyler White, Yo!

Image via Know Your Meme

In a scene from breaking bad now turned famous Skyler White confronts Jesse Pinkman about selling marijuana to her husband Walter, not knowing about the meth business he runs with Pinkman. The scene has become a meme due to the repetition of the work “Yo” by Skyler in a stiff and comedic fashion. The clip has since been paired with the Vine Boom sound effect to punctuate every time she says yo. This meme was my starting point for compositing a new scene.

Orbital Laser Cannon

Image via the Invincible Wiki

“The Hammer” as it is known is an orbital laser cannon featured in the comic series Invincible by Robert Kirkman. The Hammer gained attention when amazon animated the series and the scene in which it is deployed against Omni Man became very popular. Since then it has featured in memes as an example destructive power and frequently been composited into many other scene in which a giant space laser may or may not be appropriate.

YO!

Yamcha Pose

via GIPHY

Yamcha’s death pose in Dragon Ball Z became a meme due to the character being taken out by a rather weak villain. Since then the pose has been referenced in many anime to denote weakness or failure. In the age of the internet it is commonly used for the same purpose with artist drawing whatever character the like into the pose. I decided to use it for my composite as I thought it was fitting.

Come to Work With Me

The character for this one is me. I work for the company community IT Innovators. It is a really good job, or technically paid internship. It suits my field of study in communication well and has been a great opportunity to develop workplace skills. I have been working there for about a year now. Most of that time I was working less than ten hour a month however this summer I was given the opportunity to have a more intensive summer internship which I gladly took.

My Workplace

My position is fully online remote so I get to work from wherever I am. Usually this means either at my desk or dining room table. I prefer my desk as it’s more comfortable to work there. I have a good setup for both working and gaming the only thing that bothers me is that it is right underneath my families living room so if they are watching TV up there it can be distracting.

Reflection

I have learned I lot working for Community IT and I am very grateful to have been given my position. It’s the best job I have ever worked by far. All of my bosses and coworkers are kind and I make twice the hourly wage I made at Dominoes (although I only work half the hours). My hope is that I could get I job like this one when I graduate with my comms degree because its about as perfect as job as you could ask for in 2026.

The Sandman Strikes Again!!!

Haze via the Deadlock Wiki https://deadlock.wiki/index.php?curid=985

Introduction

Haze is an agent working for the Occult Security and Investigation Commission in the grimy streets of the Cursed Apple in the 1950. Working for the OSIC means taking on the sleaziest of the Cursed Apple’s criminal underbelly. Some days on the job really suck. Some days on the job really get to you. Luckily haze has ways to unwind such as playing the cello. But sometimes playing the cello isn’t enough to get all of that rage out of your system. She is going to have her chance very soon.

The Cursed Apple

Map via google maps https://www.google.com/maps

Before the maelstrom of 1900 brought the supernatural and normal crashing together this city was called the Big Apple, or New York, but those days have long since passed. This city once a beacon of human technological innovation has since become a melting pot for beings from all across the plains to mingle and do their magical business. But with another maelstrom fast approaching the city will soon play host to another form of visitor: the Patrons. The Hidden King and The Archmother will soon be engaging in a battle to be summoned into our reality, and this battle will be held in the streets of Manhattan. Although to say The Hidden King and Archmother will be fighting it may be overselling their contributions. They will be fighting it through proxy, via heroes and villains alike fighting tooth and nail to earn a wish from the patrons. People like haze.

The Battle

No Remorse

Haze did not regret killing the gargoyle, she had stood in the way of Haze getting her wish and she had payed the price. Sure the people of Harlem would be without their stone faced protector, but no one said vigilante justice was without risks. In her mind, Haze figured that Ivy had assumed the risk involved in participating in the ritual, and her unfortunate passing was one of them. As Haze looked out on the nighttime skyline of the Cursed Apple she couldn’t have felt better. Her wish had freed her from a life of labor and she now had the wealth to pursue her passions. Below her a new storm was brewing. A trained hitman and her cat were deep in the sewers hunting for the rat that had cost her a wish. Stay tuned.

Deadlock is a video game developed by Valve in Bellevue Washington. I have merely used their characters and setting to tell my own story. The video is meant to emulate the style of montage videos found on short form platforms such as TikTok and instagram.

Audio Reflections

Ira Glass

I found Glass’ take on the perseverance required to find a good story to be interesting. I think commonly people think that anyone with right skills can make anything interesting so to say that even the best cannot make a bad story good was novel. I also liked the emphasis on being picky right from the start to make only the best work. I think the tone of the interview was intriguing as it was quite terse yet also encouraging, it reminded me a bit of my grandfather.

Spooked at the Aquarium

I listened to Spook’s Night at the Aquarium. this piece made extensive use of music to set the tone and build atmosphere. It also used a wide variety of sound effects such as radio static and creaking doors to really sell the audience on its location. Lastly the episode made excellent use of pacing to keep the reader hanging on every word.

Reflection

I learned a lot about how to utilize all of the sounds in a story to tell it, even the lack of sound. I think this helped me focus on the little things rather than just a main speaker as I may have done before. I also got to try my hand at music which was fun.

I had a hard time learning to use new software tools to make things sound the way I wanted. I am experienced in audacity but I took my first forays into installing plugins and using garage band in this assignment which made for a good challenge.

I had an easier time writing this week as I had time off work that allowed me to dedicate more of my creative energy towards these projects.

I had in issue with my mic picking up a nonexistent buzzing noise that was driving me up the wall. I tried several methods to filter it out but to no avail.

I most enjoyed getting to try and make music. I was something I had been wanting to do for a long time and this was the perfect thing to get me to finally take the plunge.

BREAKING NEWS

Photo by Mockup Graphics on Unsplash

A giant chartreuse sphere appearing over my apparent was not on my 2026 bingo card. I was enjoying a nice quiet Saturday evening when suddenly my window went dark. I opened the blinds to look out and saw it there lazily loitering overhead. It was absolutely massive and its aggressive hue almost burnt my eyes. I was absolutely flabbergasted. It appeared I was not the only one as people on the streets below me were in all stages of panic and curiosity.

I ran out of my building as fast as I could afraid of the motives of our enigmatic visitor. For what reason could a giant startlingly yellow orb have to hover over the Bronx. I wasn’t waiting around to find out. I booked it towards the spheres periphery as fast as my legs would allow. Many others took a similar course of action and we became a wild stampede running in all for cardinal directions.

Arriving at the spheres edge the NYPD were erecting a barrier to and cautioning onlookers not to approach. It was around this time I received a notification on my phone warning me to evacuate the area. A bit late that. There were first responders waiting to usher the escaping New Yorkers to safer ground. It was only upon being free from the immediate zone around the sphere that the absurdity of my situation began to set in. I could not stop laughing for minutes. But then as my giggles faded so did the sphere. And then it was gone.

Auditory Illusions

Credit

This track is Unravel By TK from Ling tosite sigure converted to a MIDI then visualized using MIDI Trails software as per the instructions in the Auditory Illusions 3 star assignment.

Thoughts

I really like this song as a lyrical piece. It describes a decent into insanity and a slow conversion into something new and inhuman. I think this pairs nicely with the messy audio created by the conversion. You can still hear the lyrics that are not there through the disjointed mess but it feels as though you are the one going crazy. I like the sense of narrative verisimilitude that this creates.

Story

This song was originally created as the opening for the anime Tokyo Ghoul and the lyrics reflect that. the journey of the singer mirrors that of Tokyo Ghoul’s protagonist Ken Kaneki as he spirals out of control and pushes those close to him away to that they cannot see his transformation. Critically acclaimed as one of the best anime openings of all time Unravel is instantly recognizable to anime fans far and wide. I think for this reason that hearing it in this manner is particularly jarring. I have heard this song countless times (I was in the top 1000 listeners last year according to Spotify) so hearing it in this new warped version is almost disconcerting. I think this feeds into the ideas of the song though, as seeing something familiar to you turned strange and foreign is one of the central ideas.

Creation

I had a great deal of trouble getting the file to convert to a .MID as it kept crashing my converter. I was able to bypass this by using a free cloud converter site. I had never done something like this before so it was quite interesting to see how the process works. I would interested in doing something to other vocal heavy songs in the future as the effect is quite neat. I would also be interested in learning how a file is converted to a .MID as to me it seems like it must be magic.

Visit Mount Everest

YOU yes YOU should visit Mount Everest. Commonly described as the tallest mountain on earth it is a challenge to summit. Unless you are me. Here is a selfie of me climbing my way up in my preferred attire, a polo and an AirPod. The trek up is much easier when you can fly. I heard people complaining about how cold it is, luckily my laser eyes were able to warm me up. The lack of oxygen can really get to you so it was a good thing I had can of Perri-Air™ on me!

Via Spaceballs: The Wiki

Once I wrapped up filming on the summit I had to fly to a meeting with my boss. Being a superhero is hard, but the brand deals ensure you’ll never go hungry. My boss Cecil was not happy that my last fight with the Hippotinator ended up destroying three blocks of downtown LA. I tried to explain to him that fighting three men dressed up as a hippo was really good for my pr because it made me look stronger so that’s why I kept the fight and destruction going but he didn’t like that answer. He said if I did that again he’d send his pet zombies after me, but I think he was just joking.

After that I flew to Venice to get some pizza, but then a dragon came out of the water and attacked. I was like “Come on, can’t the Indomitable Polo Man get a slice without a supervillain attacking?” I don’t think the dragon could talk so it didn’t respond. Considering that I was off the clock now I figured I would leave and let Cecil figure it out. With my pizza plans pooped I flew down to Catania to get some seafood to recover from my challenging day. Filming ads and fighting hippo men isn’t easy you know.

Warm Fire, Cold Hearts is the Best Find of My Book Thrifting Career

When I walked into my local used bookseller on a Tuesday evening after getting off of my shift I did not expect to make the find of a lifetime. As I was walking down the isles of McKays used books I stumbled across a true gem. It was unassuming, a plain black spine and simple white title. But something pulled me to that beat up paperback. Its creased edges and dog eared corners told a story of many readers and many hours spent entertained. I knew I had to have it.

Photo by Blaz Photo on Unsplash

Once I got home I immediately cracked it open. Inside I found an amazing story of intrigue, romance, and cold blooded murder. The main protagonist Jeanine really drew me in with her fleshed out character and appealing narration. She is a rural farmer living the quiet life until the murder of the local pastor shocks her small town. The town hires a private investigator named David Daniel Dawson to investigate and find out whodunnit. To do this he gathers the entire town in the mayors mansion, but as he’s doing this a blizzard sweeps into the town, trapping them all inside. Working together with David Jeanine must find out which of the trapped villagers killed the pastor before they strike again.

This book really reminded me of the classic clue movie. The premise of a frantic investigation of snowed in villagers really ups the stakes of the mystery, and the tenuous firelight sets the perfect stage for romance. The camp vibes are definitely strong with this one, so come prepared. If you are an enjoyer of literature from the mid century USA this book will scratch that itch for sure. I give it a 10/10, it was entertaining, at times comedic, and all around a trip to read. I think this book is a great reminder to buy used, because you never know what gems you will find.
